Solar Power is not Just for Hippies

I look at gadgets as items that are not necessary for the ultimate survival, but something you should have to assist during your hardships.

Intrigued and excited when I stumbled upon the folding solar panel.  No better way to keep the American culture of the iPod alive while the Russians are storming at the gate.

In all reality, I believe this to be a vital piece of equipment in my get up and go bag (GUGB).  For the weight and compaction ability one these solar panels is not going to alter the overall loading of your GUGB.

Take a look what products are out there and consider the overall benefit.  I don’t recommend carrying electronic devices during any one of the fallout scenarios due to battery needs.  This gadget addresses that issue giving a new found reason to relook at the gadgets you would carry.  Several manufacturers of these type of panels:
  • Sunforce
  • Brunton
  • Sunlinq
  • Solaris
The only one of the top of my head is an MP3 player.  You must keep morale up!  No better way to do that listening to “Eye of the Tiger” as you dredge your way to the next safe house.  Who needs a camera, life as you know is over?  A cell phone can give away your position as well as a GPS device.  A recharger for your batteries is an option, but might get bulky and heavy.

The suns gonna be here for a couple more billion years so make use of it.  Get a solar panel to charge your selection of must haves.  Just remember that you stay out of the sun while the panel soaks it up.

  1. Love that I will now be able to pass along "Journey" to Gen PA (post-apocalypse)! However, I disagree with your idea about a camera. It's exactly because life as we currently know it is over that cameras will be a necessity. We will need to document the beginning of this strange new world so 2000 years from now people will be able to appreciate what we did to survive and ensure that the human race continues! Plus, we need to know what a zombie really looks like for when we rebuild Hollywood!
